Series: 2nd National Forum on the Theology of the Body (2005)
Track Number: 1
Speaker: Suzanne Baars
Published on: April 1st, 2022

In this presentation, Suzanne Baars tells us how affirmation is more than simply using short phrases to build up another person’s self-esteem. Authentic affirmation is not praise but rather a way of relating to other persons. When a person is insufficiently affirmed he tends to exhibit mannerisms which can be categorized as the symptoms of an emotional illness.

Baars goes on to explain that we can be instruments of God’s love to others by learning to authentically affirm them by being fully present to them. The essence of authentic affirmation is to receive another person with full attention.
